welcoming the sun on it’s journey back to warm humanity
winter solstice
that’s what it is / it has been celebrated for longer than we can remember
going way back all the way back to the beginning of the beginning
when humanity started counting seasons and noticing stars as they moved thru the sky and the sun as it crossed above them
lower in the winter higher in the summer
and they believed in nature like people today believe in their gods
and they needed to believe that the sun would come back again
that the life giver the light giver the radiant one would return
to give the blessings of summer
because they needed that blessing
it was not taken for granted but celebrated with gratitude

so anyways this was one such celebration
in my backyard
13 years ago welcoming the new world
because that’s what it is
the cycle turns and the sun returns
and the celebration celebrates and the solstice fire is lit
and the people gather around the fire their church
their holy place and sing something
i have no idea what and dance with the drum
and the flute oh yeah
ancient disco
anyways solstice
the word comes from Latin “sun” and “stand still,” because the Sun appears to pause before reversing its seasonal path through the heavens / thank you AI

thank you sun
bring us a new year full of light
and warmth bring the crops
bring the skaters bring the cops
bring the kids to the park where
they can frolic and play
bring the pure delight of sight
not night
bring the warm waters of mercy
and the fresh breeze of kindness to our
poor embattled humanity
where we don’t know if we’re
supposed to be humans or cyborgs
that’s what it is
