I have a new comment, a question, in fact. How do you like substack? I use WordPress but I am wondering if I might find substack a better fit. If you don't mind telling me how you like using it?
i like it / they really support their writers / infact i was wondering why you don't use it / always bringing new features like the podcast which i use / always supporting independent writers to be independent rather than feeding the algorithm
I wonder why I don't use it now too? I would like to try the podcast thing that you do. I don't know anyone who is familiar with it, so I thought I'd ask you. I will need to figure out how to transfer my wordpress content as I don't want to lose it. I see where I can just start writing on Substack, looks very simple. Is it? Do you have to pay a hosting company? It doesn't seem so.
everything has a learning curve but i think it's pretty simple / no fee for using substack / infact it's designed to make it easy to get paid for your writing / not easy to get people to make a purchase decision though / easier to sell someone a latte than a monthly subscription to a newsletter although they cost about the same
So far so good. It was fairly simple to import all my past blogs into substack, though it doesn't appear all the photos came along. Do you keep a backup of your writing? I am pretty stoked about this new platform! I definitely want to try the podcast function.
Hi Rohn, Thanks for this latest. I love Lives of a Cell too. Have it right by my bed for nighttime reading when nothing else is nearby. Interesting stuff here from you. I'm going to experiment with the dream thing.
I've often thought of the earth as a living, breathing ball who might need to sluff off her outermost layer (including humanity - perhaps she's in the process of doing it now??) so she can re-balance herself; get healthy again, in the same way that we might exfoliate dead skin. It's not a pretty image, but I think she has every right to do so. When I go down this road in my imagination, I wonder what the next intelligent life will think of all our leftover plastics and gadgets that might hide away under a deeper layer of her skin.
very thoughtful comment / i have wondered the same plus why we are so stupid if we're supposed to be so smart - language skills and technology and such / i wrote a poem about that once 'big brain' big brain
i'm wondering why we got such a big brain
doesn’t seem like we use it all that much
there is a theory that we evolved our enlarged cerebral cortex
as an adaptive tool because it gave us a survival advantage in the wild jungles
of wherever it was we lived for thousands and thousands of generations
searching for food
mating
searching for food
our main occupations
i don't know
i mean how many brains does it take to get a hard on ??
ants are well fed and they have a brain the
size of a pin prick
so here's my theory
we aren't really that smart
what we do have is a large heart
if you look at it from an objective perspective
like you are a space alien visiting earth and you're watching
all this from your stealthy space ship - would it really occur to you that we are smart ??
probly not
our technology would be primitive to you
sticks and stones
our endless wars would seem random and petty
the lunatic destruction of a perfectly good planet by creatures
that have nowhere else to live would be laughable
i suppose - either that or too depressing to contemplate
but the art
the buttressed cathedral of notre dame
the paintings of van gogh
the aspirations of a child lying in bed at night looking at the moon thru curtained windows
feeling the wonder of being alive
these accomplishments would seem far more impressive
and unique - space alien - you've probly seen your own taj mahal and tasted the subtle intonations of your own fine space wine and
i suspect you might notice our large heart the expressions of martin luther king
the poetry of walt whitman
i hope you might notice that we love each other
sometimes with great devotion and skill . . . or atleast passion
and it's something we do well
even while the bridges we build are falling down
even while the bombs we build are dropping from the bombers
even with all our big brain inventions of control and manipulation we
evolved to survive in a big scary world -
we also have our large heart designed to bring comfort and give peace
on the long quiet nights when we slept by the fire dreaming
our dreams of heroes and kings and halls and glory the goblins
and hobbits the goblets filled with wine the gods of earth and sky
sea and heaven
we dreamed of heaven even then
we created a god when we couldn't find it within
we lost our way with explanations and descriptions
too much storage capacity perhaps
designed to identify poisonous plants and predict the seasons
I’m out for my afternoon walk. The birds that remain are chirping happily; traffic on the overpass nearby overwhelms them, but I hear them anyway. And I agree. Our hearts are the outstanding thing.
Went to the 3D immersive of Van Gogh’s work last week in New Orleans and it proved your point about human hearts. Pretty powerful experience. And yet he was pushed aside while he was alive, which maybe makes the work all the more powerful. I got weepy the moment I stepped in and saw excellent reproductions of his vases filled with flowers. Why oh why if not for his heart and mine?
inneresting / if you want to experiment with your diet and your dreams then you will be engaging your little people in conversation / learning what they like / i think it's super cool and exciting / a project of self discovery
Wow, the smallpox was literally very small! Sad stories about the loss of life, particularly the wallop the native people in the US got after Columbus showed up. The talk about living on a small blue marble got me thinking about the whos of Whoville who had to shout very very loud to be heard.
I like what you said about mutation and evolution; mutation makes more sense to me than evolution.
Have you ever read Bill Bryson's book, "The Body: A Guide for Occupants"? It picks up where "Lives of a Cell" left off.
The Witte Museum had a great exhibit, "The Secret Inside You," which explored the human microbiome and offered new perspectives on bacteria, viruses, and other microbes that call our bodies home. I had to go sterilize my hands afterwards!
mutation is how evolution works / i have bill bryson's book it's good but 'lives of a cell' goes a million miles beyond that in many directions / why did you sterilize your hands if you learned that all those microbes were your friends ?? i would think that would be the opposite reaction

Well, I imported! I don't know what I'm doing yet! My photos don't come through, except the lead one. I will spend time later educating myself.
you imported you blog to substack ?? i don't know how that process works / their customer service is available but not easy to find
Oh wait I stand corrected- photos did come through and this is very exciting.
super cool / welcome to substack

Perfect poem. Thank you.

wow what a coincidence / i hope i get a chance to see that / indeed i think we should focus on what we're good at / well besides war
The diet does seem to work on my dreams. I wake up and wonder what is going on in my head and why!
inneresting / if you want to experiment with your diet and your dreams then you will be engaging your little people in conversation / learning what they like / i think it's super cool and exciting / a project of self discovery
I will work on it
