I am not super hopeful for a stop to repeating cycles of violent history. Yet, it's worth trying to do our part while here. My office is near a center that helps the houseless folks. We always say hi and engage in short conversations. Regarding pubs, I long for more of them as a place to talk. While not promoting drinking excessively, I love meeting up at the pub to talk to someone and being around others doing the same. I think we might need less therapists if we had more designated talking places. What I find interesting is so many people are quite fearful of speaking, asking questions, or commenting on blogs. I am planning on watching the Ken Burns recent show. Looks rather horrifying but very important to pay attention to.
i'm hopeful but i'm also a verified and registered altruist / oh well can't help it / i hope we're all surprised in some positive way with how all this turns out
The documentary also pointed out, painfully, that the Nazis rebuffed early criticism from the U.S. of their treatment of Jews with America's own LEGAL segregation laws and frequent lynchings of Black Americans. They took that as a model for separating and then removing their Jewish citizens. I thought it worth mentioning in the context of your very timely essay.
Thank you for your very timely comment. Excellent point. Lynchings and segregation laws in America were part of the Nazi rationalizations for their actions. A painful part of our history as you mentioned and painful to see it reoccurring. A recent news article points out this dangerous trend. https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/21/politics/qanon-fans-donald-trump/index.html
