Once upon a time, back in the nineties, when Tulum was just a sleepy little Mayan village and the Caribbean coast still had sandy beaches with palm trees and mangrove swamps and wild jungle stretching out endlessly, I lived in Mexico.
Oh the baby turtles... I spent a month in Trinidad mid-nineties, and one night went to see the mama turtles lay eggs. Some babies were ready to be released and we were allowed to help. Later that night I awoke in my room with an expansive view of the sea, and my heart ached for the safety of those babies, so small and determined, but so vulnerable. I nearly decided not to go home but to stay and help on that beach. I think of those turtles often. Thanks for your story, Rohn.
Great post, Rohn! What to do about the husband, indeed? Made me laugh. Turtle shell is a work of powerful art. Thanks for the story and glad you got to live this.
Oh Rohn! Omg! I am all tears of joy, love & compasión from reading your account of that magical beach in Tulum way back when it was uncontaminated by all the tourist condos now being Built destroying the previous jingles. And of cenotes..that I love so much.. And of your Maya Friends! Me too! As You know I send one spring month on the Mayan jungle coast every year since 2005..Btw. I never knew You were there with Buddy in his scuba driving business! Plus that You also were an expert diver. My goodness my very all around talented friend!!! Well that piece that I just ready touched My heart in many wats! Thank You for such a poignantly beautiful well written post! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

the turtles from that beach have been returning in record numbers to lay their eggs not only on that beach but on others along the yucatan coast

How lovely! That piece of turtle shell does look like some secret message.
One of your best stories. You should write more stories about your time in Tulum. Perhaps another book?
